Lake Maria State Park, a big-woods backcountry park near Monticello northwest of the Twin Cities, offers three hike-in camper cabins available year-round. The cabins are located one-half mile to one mile from the parking area and are reachable only on foot, giving them a true backcountry feel. Each cabin sleeps six and is heated by a wood stove, but has no electricity. A vault toilet is located nearby. The cabins are rustic one-room wooden structures with bunk beds and mattresses, a table, and benches, with outdoor fire rings for cooking. Pets are not allowed, and reservations are required through the Minnesota state park reservation system.
