Idaho Parks and Recreation operates seven backcountry yurts north of Idaho City along Highway 21, on Boise National Forest land about an hour and a half from Boise: Petersen, Banner Ridge, Elkhorn, Skyline, Hennessy, Rocky Ridge and Stargaze. Each yurt sleeps up to six on one futon and two bunk beds and is heated by a wood stove with firewood provided. In summer, high-clearance vehicles can drive within a few hundred yards of most yurts; in winter, reaching them requires a 1-to-3-mile ski or snowshoe trek from Park N' Ski lots. The system began in 1996 with the Banner Ridge Yurt.
