Edisto Refuge (Treehouse Island)
Reevesville, SC
About this stay
Operated by Carolina Heritage Outfitters since 1989, the Edisto River Refuge is a private 150-acre island retreat reachable only by canoe or kayak. Three rustic treehouses — sleeping 2-3, 3-6, and 5-8 guests — are tucked out of sight of one another around the edges of a quiet river peninsula, each built on dual elevated platform decks with rope hammocks, dining decks, outdoor grills, small gas stoves, and cooking equipment supplied. This is true off-grid camping: no electricity or running water, with outhouse facilities on site. Guests paddle in as part of a 10-mile river trip, watching for herons, egrets, wood storks, wild turkeys, and deer along the blackwater Edisto. Overnight stays run March through November.
